Crew Member Discloses Depression In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the flight, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.
